24 September 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 17 September
Today I was the first one done emailing.  That’s pretty unusual.  All four of us spent a while cleaning our apartments, and then went to X’s for FHE and dinner.  The Meyers, a senior couple serving in the Freiburg temple, were there too.  (They were also at the Szvoboda’s last night).  We had a very, very American meal of sloppy joes, salad, root beer floats, and Oreos.  Today’s miracle is that although I know and can see so many imperfections in myself, I also know that one day each of those will be made perfect.

Tuesday, 18 September
We had Zone Training today.  Finding hours has been reinstated.  President Smith came and gave a presentation on the growth of the Church, and our Zone Leaders gave training on goals.  We had one cancellation, by a member again.  Our only program was Angolora.  No one came to Kezdo today, but there were eight in Profi and Halado.  My miracle of the day is from Bishop Rife: it is a spiritual reasoning that our God is a happy God.

Wednesday, 19 September
One cancellation today.  Went streeting and tracting with mild success.  We dropped by J’s and S’s to see if we could offer our help with anything.  They answered no and revealed that they’re not really interested.  However, a miracle today was that on the way out we saw their neighbors and talked with them.  They are Mongolian siblings, brother and sister, and were willing to listen and ask several questions about us.  The sister accepted a Book of Mormon, committed to read out of it, and we set up a program for next week.  My hidden or additional miracle today is that while we were streeting and tracting, I had the opportunity to talk to and get to know my companion, Elder Nabrotzky, better.

Thursday, 20 September
More streeting and tracting today.  Unfortunately no success.  Met with A and B today, and talked to them about Family History/Genealogy Work and conversion, respectively.  Elder Clavel is here right now, and Elder Nabrotzky’s in Papa for splits.  My miracle today is that I still haven’t missed a day on my mission with my journal writing.

Friday, 21 September
Today we were on splits with the ZL’s.  Elder Clavel and I went tracting.  Also, I spent a good amount of time practicing the piano as I was asked to play 10 hymns for a good portion of the Branch.  We met with a new investigator, Z, today (half-English program).  Our expectations don’t quite line up, and we can only hope that he’ll become interested in the gospel part.  I bought a second whip today.  My miracle is being able to play 70+ hymns.

Saturday, 22 September
I saw some deer today.  They’re pretty unusual here, so that’s today’s miracle.  We went up to Sopron today.  Elder Abrok and I had two programs and I interviewed one of their bapt dates.  She passed!  Trains stick on weekends since over half of them don’t run.  When we got back to Szombathely, we were taken out to dinner by President and Sister Smith.  They also brought the rest of my winter stuff up from Buda.

Sunday, 23 September
Today was a combined District Conference between Szombathely, Sopron, and Papa.  Despite our best efforts, none of our investigators came.  In the evening we had dinner with the K family.

17 September 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 10 September
Transfer calls came today and surprised all of us.  I am the last man standing in Szombathely.  The other three Elders are all leaving.  Elder Alldredge is going to Sopron with Elder Abrok, Elder Bullock is going to Gyor, and Elder Haws to Buda.  Because Elder Alldredge will be in Sopron, he will still be in my District so I will see him each week at District Meeting and be able to go on splits with him.  On the arriving side, I will be receiving Elder Nabrotzky.  He is Elder Reese’s greenie who I mothered; is starting his 4th transfer, and has only served in the Buda companionship which Elder Reese and I opened.  Elder Masters and Elder Jones will be whitewashing the other companionship.  Also, Elder Carlsen became the new assistant.

In the evening we had a program with K and ate sandwiches.  K’s cat took a leak on Elder Alldredge’s backpack causing it to reek.  My miracle today is Elder Alldredge.  It was great to get to serve with him.  While I’m sad we won’t get a second transfer together, I am glad he’s still in my district and I’ll get to see what happens to him and how he likes serving with a Hungarian.

Tuesday, 11 September
This morning I gave Elder Alldredge plenty of time to pack.  We went and found some good ant-killer to get rid of all the ones in our apartment.  We also met with A, talked about the Atonement, and finally started talking to B.  We hope to meet with her in the future.  We finished our day with Angolora, in which I read “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”  Transfers are tomorrow.  My miracle today is an experience from three years ago.

Wednesday, 12 September
Transfers were today.  We got up at 4:30 to make sure that we’d catch our train in time.  Hauling baggage (especially up and down stairs) is always so much fun.  Upon arriving in Budapest, Elder Nabrotzky quickly joined us; and he, Elder Alldredge, Elder Haws, and I set off.  We first went and found Elder Alldredge a ukulele, which he plans on playing a lot this coming transfer.  I then took the three of them to Vaci utca and Fuvamter (the two main souvenir places in the country).  I bought a couple of things, including 3-Player Chess.  The four of us then went back to the Mission Home and saw most of the other Missionaries.  In the late afternoon we caught our train-ride back.  We made it back with only 10 minutes to run to Spar before it closed to buy some essential food.  My miracle today is that I’m in double digits: Transfer #10!  So fast…

Thursday, 13 September
Today was my first day with Elder Nabrotzky.  We went shopping this morning and met with the other Elders for about an hour so I could tell them about the Branch and the city and the work here.  Today I also got several programs in Z set up for tomorrow.  In the evening we had our only program with D, who Elder Nabrotzky and I both taught while in Buda.  He has attended Church a couple times, one baptism, still reads and prays weekly (not daily), and recognizes answers and promptings to his prayers.  One time he prayed due to loneliness and then felt like God was there.  My miracle for today is that when I asked him about the baptism, he said, “Woah!  This is a power that could destroy the world in a second,” as a way to describe his feelings.  He said he’ll call us again the next time he comes up to Szombathely to visit his parents.  It was fun to get to see him yet again.

Friday, 14 September
We went to Zala today with Z.  Our first program was with Z.  She read out of the Book of Mormon, but said that even after re-reading a few sections it was still sometimes hard to understand.  We talked about prayer and how she can pray for help before and after to understand what she reads.  She also asked about what differences there are between our Church and other churches.  So we read through all 13 Articles of Faith together, talking about each one.  The program went very, very well and at the end she committed to come to Church.  We then met with the A family.  They had met with Missionaries in the past.  Within the first three minutes the wife said they are willing to talk and visit with us, but, as they have told Missionaries in the past, they have no interest in being baptized or in joining the Church.  The husband seemed like he would’ve been a lot more open if the wife wasn’t there.  In the end we only shared a spiritual thought before leaving.  After their family we met with Z.  We assisted Z in sharing a Home Teaching message.  I also anointed Z, and Z gave him a blessing at the end of our program.  Today’s miracle is that we barely caught the train.  The ticket checker saw us running out of the station and across the platforms and waited just after we got on before shutting the door.  If we had missed it, we wouldn’t have gotten back until 11:30.  Also, two other notes: Elder Nabrotzky had some very funny mistakes while trying to speak Hunglish today; and I learned I have the same birthday as Z.

Saturday 15 September (15 Months on Mission)
District Meeting was this morning.  We have a District that’s good at singing, and I finally found someone out here that can sing lower than I.  During the meeting, I led a training on the Book of Mormon.  It was fun to already see and talk to Elder Alldredge again.  We met with K.  Her husband was there this time and we had lunch again.  She once again started saying there weren’t any differences between our two religions, so, like with Z, we started reading the Articles of Faith.  Now she admits there are differences, just not important ones according to her.  Unfortunately, she didn’t read the Book of Mormon or the pamphlet we gave her, and rejected our invitation to come to Church.  After her program we had one cancellation and one dog, both by members.  In the evening Z called and said she can’t come tomorrow, but will come next week for sure.  At Fiatal Est we played American Football and Capture the Flag.  My miracle today is that it is time to write about my companion, Elder Brandon Nabrotzky.  He is from Ontario, Canada, is half French, and also of some Polish decent (“Nabrotzky” is a Polish name).  He’s in his fourth transfer, having served his first three in Buda.  He is the oldest of six children, having three younger brothers and two sisters.  He’s studied German, French, the clarinet, flute, and piano; and wants to be a music or language teacher in the future.  I’m tired and that’s about all I can think of for now.

Sunday, 16 September
Today two of the less-actives I contacted in Zalaegerszeg came to Church.  The secretaries asked me to collect addresses and contact information for 9 members, which was crazy to try to receive before any of them left after Church.  Today’s miracle is that I was able to take the Sacrament.

10 September 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 3 September
Another pretty uneventful P-Day.  We went out and tracted for several hours in the evening.  My miracle is that I always have loved whenever it has been within my power to fulfill and keep any of the promises I make.

Tuesday, 4 September
Went on splits with Elder Bullock.  We went tracting and got one let-in.  In the evening we had Angolora.  Two new people showed up that I had invited.  Elder Alldredge gave the spiritual thought on families.  My miracle today is not a miraculous event insomuch as it is a reflection.  Lately I have had a couple moments in which I've questioned my views of some parts of the gospel.  Not my faith in it, or the truthfulness of it, but just whether or not what I believe or am expecting actually aligns with the doctrine of the Church in complete accuracy and harmony.  One example would be about the perfection we all try to aim for.  More often than not, I have looked at “perfection” as being able to not only do everything flawlessly, but to also do as much as possible at the same time, all perfectly and flawlessly, and often for extended periods without any decline, decrease, or break.  Now I'm not so sure that will ever, ever happen.  Even the Lord stopped to see "that it was good."  Rather, perhaps the Church and the gospel teach us to aim for more what I would call "precision" over "perfection." I'm not sure what I often aimed for exists, even in the eternal realms.

Wednesday, 5 September
This morning I planned our District Meeting and made two hours of calls.  Our only program was with K.  We went and did some look-ups.  My miracle is that my character has changed more in these last two transfers than I ever thought it would.

Thursday, 6 September
We're on double-splits right now.  This morning Elder Alldredge and I came up to Sopron to go on splits with Elders Abrok and Bowen.  Elders Bowen and Alldredge went out streeting and tracting while Elder Abrok and I made three hours of calls.  We then had a program with two of their investigators on Baptismal Date.  In the evening was Angolora, where I gave the spiritual thought.  We then celebrated Elder Abrok's birthday, which was yesterday.  My miracle is that in the apartment here I found more Ensigns, including a few special ones on Joseph Smith.  The reason I said it's a double split is that tonight the Zone Leaders came down, also to go on splits with the Sopron Elders.

Friday, 7 September
I'm back in Szombathely.  This morning was District Meeting.  I conducted the meeting, gave a training on Goals and the Key Indicators, learned the Sopron Branch has fallen to shambles (really, it's practically destroyed), and learned that the "golden investigator" Elders Alldredge and Bullock found on splits is actually just gay and seriously interested in both of them.  When we got back, we went straight to the shop and picked up my bike then headed to B's.  She fed us langos's, gave us a referral, and says there are a few others who might be interested and she'll try to have their contact information for us next time.  Our second program was supposed to be at her house.  However, when we csengo-ed (rang the bell) her, she picked up and started talking to us, but once she learned who we were, she hung up, as well as block our phone when we tried calling.  Family night was in the evening.  My miracle today is the relationship between God and life after death.  Plenty of people I have met have said God exists, but that there is no life after death.  I've found that a good question to think about accompanying this is "If there is no life after this one, if death is the end, why is God important?"

Saturday, 8 September
We did a bunch of old area book look-ups today, and scheduled an appointment with one of them for tomorrow.  At another looked-up apartment we met with J and S.  Since the Missionaries last met with them, they'd forgotten everything, even about the Book of Mormon.  They did remember one of the two Sisters had black hair, was named Angelica, and made brownies with them.  (They met with the Sisters eleven times in the past).  We completely reviewed the First Lesson, and gave them another Book of Mormon.  We focused and committed them to pray, read, and come to church.  They both said prayers during the lesson.  We also arranged for us to go there at 8:15 tomorrow morning to walk them to church.  Next, we met with A.  Elder Alldredge led a lesson on Prophets.  A really didn't know anything about Thomas S Monson.  She has her talk prepared for tomorrow.  At Fiatal Est we played soccer and basketball.  My miracle is that all the look-ups we've been doing met with the Sisters in 2006/07.  Almost none of them have been contacted at all in five years!

Sunday, 9 September
Well, to start things off, we went to J's and S's at 8:15, but she said her brother was admitted to the hospital this morning and they were going to go spend the day visiting him instead.  In church, both A and K gave talks on repentance and a foundation on the gospel, respectively.  Both were good.  This was the last day I'll see T for a while.  She left tonight to attend college in Szekesfehervar.  We went to our program that we had set up yesterday.  However she wasn't home and the husband made it very clear that he has no desire to meet, but said we can come back later this week when she's home.  We even got her phone number from him.  I went through a long list of members from a couple years ago with two members, and learned about some 20 less actives in the branch.  Transfer calls come tomorrow.  I think Elder Bullock's leaving.  My hair is still super short.  It's been nearly a month and a half, but it's still shorter than I would like.  Today's miracle is that during lunch some tomato sauce exploded, splattering all over.  Yet, while some didn't splatter far enough and other drops shot past me, not a single speck stained my clothing.  One part had a trail leading right up to me, and then stopped.

Monday, 10 September (Part 1)
Transfer calls came this morning.  I'm staying here, although the rest of my District is leaving.  Elder Alldredge is going to Sopron (so I'll still see him every week, as he's in my district), Elder Bullock is going to Gyor, and Elder Haws is going to Buda.  My new companion is going to be Elder Nabrowsky (Elder Reese's greenie, who took my spot when I left Buda.  This will be his second area).  Elder Masters and Elder Jones are coming here.  I've never been around either of them before.  However, Elder Masters only has two transfers left, so he's pretty old and I've heard a fair amount about him.  Also, I took his place when I went to Szekesfehervar.  Elder Jones is Elder Swett's greenie, and is known purely for his very bubbly, bouncy personality.  (He's probably one of the three, if not the most enthusiastic missionary currently here).  Elder Carlsen went AP to replace Elder Beaumont, and Elder Swett and Elder Beaumont are both training for their second time.  This is the first time I've been in an area for more than two transfers.  I've been able to see the numbers of this companionship increase two transfers ago from the transfer before I got here, as well as see them continue to slightly increase this last transfer as well.  Hopefully we can keep that trend going (and preferably speed it up a bit).  I'm excited to receive Elder Nabrowsky and to get to serve around him.  Lastly, I hit double digits: Transfer #10!  I'm getting old.... well, on to next transfer!

Other than that, things are moving along.  I'm happy that I don't have to pack today and tomorrow.  I'm also happy that I'll get to know Elder Nabrowsky better, and still be around Elder Alldredge.

Well, my companion needs to begin packing.  Remember to make each day be a little better than the last!

Szeretettel,

Shipp Elder

3 September 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

This week I don’t have any pictures to attach.  Sorry!

Tuesday, 28 August
We met with A today.  We helped her a little with a talk she has to give in two weeks; read part of D&C 20 together; and talked about the many priesthood offices and duties.  A has been in the hospital a lot recently.  Things are going well between her and B.  We hope to be able to meet with her in the future.

Wednesday, 29 August
Today we had three to four hours to street.  We finally made it on and around the island.  While streeting I had a tragedy.  Because we were out so long in the heat of the day, we stopped to get ice cream.  I got a nice chocolate covered one on a stick.  Three minutes later, tragedy struck.  Within two to three minutes, both the chocolate layer and the ice cream melted enough that the stick slid right up through it.  What a tragedy.  I lost half my 45 cent ice cream bar to the pavement.  Oh, what a terrible tragedy!  While streeting we had both a lot, and not too much success.  We successfully obtained eight different names and numbers.  However, only three actually live in Szombathely, so we had to pass off the information of the other five to other missionaries.  During Angolora tonight two new people came.  Lastly, a miracle: I have three new cousins.

Thursday, 30 August (One Year Mark in Hungary)
It’s been exactly one year since I first arrived in the country.  That is the miracle of today.  Today I was on splits with Elder Haws.  We met with K again.  Once again we were fed lunch.  The lesson completely fell through with her saying none of this is new or unfamiliar, and with her not wanting to talk about or watch the Restoration Film.  She, her parents, and her daughter are all practicing Catholics.  She believes that the main cores of our churches are the same.  She fails to see any importance in proper authority, but instead feels that Christ overcame everything and that faith and commitment in following Him is all we need. I’m afraid and fearful that we’re going to lose her.  I’m really hoping that a knowledge of the nature of the Godhead and importance of a living Prophet can reach her.  That’s my hardest struggle with the Catholic Church: some people only claim connection to it because of tradition, and then use that excuse to try to get out of everything; but also, on the other end, there are those who are Catholic, who truly desire to follow Christ and have His presence in their life, so they do what they can, and, to a degree, they receive some of the light of Christ in their life.  However, when you are already in the light it becomes harder to see additional brighter light than if you were just in darkness.  We also had one dog and two cancellations which gave me and Elder Haws plenty of time to street and tract.

Friday, 31 August
Today started out with District Meeting.  I lead a training on “The Warrior Part 2: The Armor of God.”  The Zone Leaders were also here and went on splits with the other companionship.  It rained all of today.  We had one cancellation, and spent the rest of our day working on and out of our Area Book.  A half-miracle today is I learned that between streeting, tracting, and tabling, I’ve gotten 41 names and numbers.  Only one have I met with twice (and then, they too stopped).  K, Z, and Z are the only ones I’ve met more than twice; all three were found by past missionaries.  I was just the one to look them back up and follow-up with them.  I hope and pray that out of the 41 and counting I’ve found and collected while here, some will be sought out by, and meet with, missionaries in the future.

Saturday, 1 September
It’s still raining.  We went to Zalaegerszeg today.  When we arrived, we found many stands along the main road for the “Egerszeg Festival.”  However, it wasn’t even a fraction of the size of the Savaria Carnival.  We met with Z for almost two hours.  The first part was around English, but the bulk of the time was on the Plan of Salvation and following up.  She had read out of the Book of Mormon a little bit each week, read the Restoration Pamphlet, prays daily, and prayed about Joseph Smith as well as the Book of Mormon.  She gets a good feeling and feels the Holy Ghost each time she prays, reads, and meets with us.  She feels she may have gotten her answer.  We talked about everything from the Pre-Mortal to Spirit World, and she committed to baptism, acknowledging that it’s necessary.  We can’t set a date yet due to how infrequent our visits have been.  I’m excited though.  In the evening we went tracting for a couple hours.  My miracle today is the Young Women’s’ program.  It has some really uplifting parts in it.

Sunday, 2 September
Fast Sunday today.  We had a good fast and testimony meeting.  The S’s daughter returned from her mission.  My miracle was a good fast and prayer.

28 August 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Tuesday, 21 August
Not much for today.  Shopped, emailed, studied, and tried to find new investigators.  I was able to find out that Elder Alldredge and I biked over 33 miles yesterday.  For a miracle, I haven’t gotten sick in a long time.

Wednesday, 22 August
I have lots to write about today.  We finally met with I after four weeks of trying to set up.  He loves to talk, and it was interesting to listen because he mostly talked about his six years in Africa.  While he’s read parts of the Book of Mormon in the past, he believes that the way to Peace is through brotherhood and friendships that every society needs to form; that Churches aren’t necessary, but exist to assist in that purpose.  We also met with Z again.  Finally!  During the past three weeks he has been sure to pray every day (every evening), and has read out of the Book of Mormon about every other day.  We had to push back his baptismal date, but he wants to continue investigating and we laid out a plan for the rest of the Missionary Lessons.  The other Elders were in Budapest today, so Elder Alldredge taught the Profi class and I taught Kezdo.  In the evening, we met with K and his wife.  They are both members, and K served a Mission.  We ate dinner with them (fruit soup, rokott krumpli, and apple pie), and shared the story of Naaman.  Neither of K’s parents are members; they aren’t interested in learning about the Church, but said we’re always welcome to come and visit.  In the end, they’re all pretty awesome and really friendly.  Today’s miracle is patience and persistence.  I first contacted I, as well as K’s Mother, back on July 21 and have been trying to meet since.  Also, the last time we had met with Z was July 31.  It’s taken a long time to finally meet, but it was worth it.  Finally, a funny story:  today Elder Alldredge bought a container of sour cream and started eating it.  Within a spoonful or three he realized it didn’t quite taste much like yogurt.  Doh!

Thursday, 23 August (9 Months left; start of the Savaria Carnival!)
Today, like yesterday, will also be a big entry.  This morning we went over to K’s (the woman whose daughter lives in Provo), and had lunch with her.  Like last time, she was super kind and we had a nice visit.  She prays but hasn’t read the Book of Mormon, so we gave her a challenge to read two parts and told her we’d like to watch the Restoration Film next time.  She sent us home with a bunch of leftovers.  In the evening we went to two home teaching appointments with C.  We visited A first, and C shared a lesson on the Holy Ghost.  We then met with B.  B was baptized three years ago, but has become inactive since then.  With her, we all talked about faith.  She is in charge of the Relief Society lesson in two weeks.  Hopefully with that, she’ll start coming back to church.  In the evening, we barely made it back in time to watch the Opening Ceremony of the Savaria Carnival in the Foter.  They had a small squad marching in Roman Armor.  A fire magician and fire dancer performed and handed a torch off to the Mayor dressed as a Roman senator and he lit the beacon.  Afterwards, a band and dance group performed a series of various Jazz and Latin routines.  While there, we met K and R and stood with them throughout the show.

Friday, 24 August
Today started with District Meeting.  I gave training on “Teaching Patterns” and we set a District Goal to challenge any investigator we meet to Baptism.  On the way back, Elder Alldredge’s tire popped.  In the afternoon, we went to some parts of the Savaria Carnival.  We tried going to the Ruin Garden but nothing was set up yet, so we went and looked at shops in and around the Foter.  I made two of my own metal souvenirs and bought my first whip (it’s white).  Our only program cancelled.  We stopped back by the Ruin Garden where they had a talent show and slave auction.  Our day ended with Csaladi Est, playing soccer.  My miracle today was a thought on Pride.  It came to me today that whenever anyone is unwilling or hesitant to make a change for the better, it will be a problem with Pride.  While there may be other excuses given or presented, in the end, the refusal to change or improve will have Pride as its source.

Saturday, 25 August
One dog and one cancellation today.  We got Elder Alldredge’s bike back this morning.  For our language study and lunch break, we went to the Historical Theme Park.  While there, we saw mounted cavalry archers, medieval artillery, dozens of fight reenactments, and the “Great Gladiator Games.”  We had time to look around more of the stands, find some bracelets, pouches, and Elder Alldredge bought the nicest whip we could find.  In the evening for Fiatal Est we all went to the parade.  We went over half an hour early to find our favorite spot and to be right up front.  The parade was really fun to watch and an hour long.  We saw K and his Dad in the band.  My favorite part was an impromptu battle between the Crusaders and the Nomads right in front of us (within a foot at times).  Elder Alldredge and I are both sunburned.  My miracle was that I was able to serve and be here during the three days of the year at the same time of the Savaria Carnival.  If I was anywhere else, I would have missed it completely.  The Savaria Carnival really was one of the neatest and most unique events I've had (and probably will have) on my mission.

Sunday, 26 August
No investigators came to church today.  We don’t have many programs planned for this next week.  In the afternoon we left to Budapest.  We are at the mission home right now so we can be here in the morning for Greenie Training.  My miracle is that it rained all of today and not yesterday or Friday during the Carnival.

Monday, 27 August
Greenie Training was today.  Ten of the trainers, me included, went and played basketball.  Right off the bat I jammed my ring finger.  It’s colored and swollen now.  Today President Smith shared our story of finding K.  He also made several new announcements about rules concerning the internet.  On the way home we all made it – no one missed the train this time.  When we got back to Szombathely, we found that all four of our bikes, along with all the other bikes locked outside the train station overnight, had their tires slashed!  We all need to get all our tires replaced.  My miracle for the day is that I’m lucky to have received and to be training Elder Alldredge.

21 August 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 13 August
Today the four of us went to Koszeg, a small little city just a short train ride north of here.  There we walked all around the town.  The two highlights were the Jesus’ Heart Cathedral and a Castle.  It was at the Koszeg Castle that the Turkish invasion was halted and, eventually, repulsed.  It is in memorial to those events that the Savaria Carneval will be celebrated at the end of this month.  During our trip to the town, I took almost 100 pictures.

Tuesday, 14 August
One thing I haven’t really included in any past entries is that since President Smith replaced President Baughman, there have been several changes.  Some examples include rules on iPods, P-Days, Super P-Days, an increase in District size, District splits, and District meetings; and a reduction of Zone Leader and AP splits, trainings, and Zone Conferences.  Today we had a really empty day (up to 8 hours of finding).  We spent an hour cleaning our apartment.  I made 13 phone calls and we streeted and tracted for five hours, but we didn’t get a single program or find out of any of the three.

In the evening we looked up a house where Elders Headrick and Remy quickly gave a woman a Book of Mormon two transfers ago.  Elder Alldredge and I biked out there and the woman that answered the door asked if we were Mormon and excitedly let us in.  In short, and in no particular order: they were super kind; the woman and her husband owned one of the two biggest houses I’ve been to in Hungary; only the wife was there at first, her husband later joined us; I also got to talk with their daughter for 5-10 minutes on the phone; the daughter has lived in Provo for three years; the parents have visited her there, and the Mom loves Utah, said that everyone was super kind and sincere, that the families are beautiful, and at one point said that after Szombathely, Provo is her favorite place in the world; she said she’s kept an eye out for Missionaries for over a year but has never seen any; the daughter has met (still meets with) the Missionaries, and the Mom knows a good amount about our Church; all three are open; the parents committed to start praying and reading out of the Book of Mormon; both the mother and the daughter offered to relay any messages to our families, and the mother offered us use of her iPad to text, email, or Skype our families if we ever want to in the future (not really possible, but still a really kind offer); also, lastly, the husband and wife said we are welcome to come over anytime.  Awesome!  Now, for the miracle of it all: as I said, or wrote, earlier the wife “said she’d kept an eye out for Missionaries…but has never seen any.”  They didn’t have a Book of Mormon, but accepted one and committed to read from it.  If you haven’t figured it out yet, the miracle is that we went to the wrong house!  We chose one house, just one out of thousands, trying to get to one, but went to a different one, and had an encounter better than we ever would have imagined.

Wednesday, 15 August
Another empty day.  We got dogged twice.  Went streeting, and got one find for a mother of two; but she actually lives in Pest, so I got to pass all her information off to Elder Headrick.  We also had plenty of time to go tracting.  We got one let-in; however, it was with a very scientific woman (almost atheist) who was very set in her ways.  Angolora was tonight.  Only one person in my class, and only three total.  My miracle is that our trials in life always cause reflection, and reflection is always necessary.  In addition, I had one idea for somewhere to go today; however we questioned it a little at first, and later, when the time came, we completely and entirely forgot it and could not think of it at all, even to the point where it became pointless and impossible to try.  I have taken that to be a fulfillment of the patterns of the Holy Ghost and the stuttering of minds it can cause when we follow false ideas.

Thursday, 16 August
Two cancellations today.  All of these dogs and cancellations recently have been frustrating.  However, we still had three programs with members today, all of which were feeding programs.  This morning we went over to X’s and I’s to help mow their lawn and weed.  After we finished they fed us lunch.  1 ½ hours later, Elder Alldredge and I ran over to K’s.  She also had a very large snack for us as we shared our object lesson.  Immediately after K’s program, we went over to have dinner with T and her parents.  It was the first time I’ve tried langos’s.  My first one wasn’t as great as I was accidently told that the salt was sugar.  The rest were much better.  I’m really tired tonight.  My miracle today is Hungarian history.  I learned the names of the chiefs of the original seven tribes that inhabited this land back during the time it first became a country: Almos, Elod, Ond, Kond, Tas, Huba, and Tohotom.

Friday, 17 August
I’m in Sopron right now and am on splits with my second cousin, Elder Bowen.  Jumping back to this morning, Elder Alldredge and I took a 7:00 train to Gyor, arriving over an hour before the Zone Training started.  So, we took that time exploring Gyor; finding the Belvaros, a castle/monastery, an obelisk; went on a river walk; then made our way to the Branch House.  This afternoon we had our first “Zone Training.”  While I much prefer “Zone Conference”, the shorter Training does leave more time for us to get back to our areas and work.  After the training (which was on Prayer), we began our splits.  Elder Bowen and I made it to Sopron in good time arriving around 3:00.  It was nice as it gave us enough time to go streeting, tracting, and take part in the Branch activity, each for nearly two hours.  The apartment in Sopron is huge and is super nice.  It is far bigger than any I’ve served in.  It is also on the fifth floor of a building, so it has a nice view.  Also, the Branch House is located on the third and fourth floors of that same building.  My miracle today is that the way we see and feel about our Missions reflect the way we see and feel about God and His work.  I have felt good about my Mission so far; my progress and success, both outside and inside.

Saturday, 18 August
This morning we postponed the train ride to split back until the afternoon, to give me and Elder Bowen, as well as Elders Alldredge and Abrok, time to study together.  Upon splitting back, Elder Alldredge and I received permission to go with the other Elders and a member to a soccer game here against the team from Gyor.  In the end if finished 0-0, which is by far my biggest problem with soccer: no one ever scores!  In the evening we played dodgeball for Fiatal Est.  Missionary work is going to be dead this coming week: Monday is August 20, one of the two biggest National Holidays; Thursday night to Sunday night is the Savaria Carneval, which is even bigger; and this whole week is the last week of summer before school starts and is predicted to be hot and sunny the whole week.  My miracle today is that I have decided to take a break from my MP3 Player and Ensigns, and give myself more time for silent meditation and to read the Book of Mormon.

Sunday, 19 August
Nothing special today.  Went to Church, did weekly planning, dinner at Szvobodas’, and made some calls.  Could not get a single program scheduled.  No one is willing to meet this week.  My miracle is that the ordinance of the Sacrament was more reverent and more spiritual today.

Monday, 20 August
Today was a Super P-Day, since it was also one of the two biggest national holidays.  Elder Alldredge and I left our apartment by 8:00 this morning and began biking out to various castles.  We did not return until 2:00.  First was one in Vep.  It had nice grounds, being surrounded by a peaceful forest; although, it did have a lot of bugs.  Something interesting about the castle is that it was actually located on a college campus.  The building itself was really similar to the one at Szabadkigyos near Bekescsaba.  Our second stop was Ikervar.  However, it was surrounded by a gate and walls, which were shut.  There are currently a couple rich families living there, and, while it was really big; the walls prevented us from getting any pictures or walking around it.  Sarvar was the highlight of the day.  It was a big, real, medieval-looking castle (similar to Koszeg and Gyula).  While it’s generally closed every Monday, we were able to get in thanks to the holiday.  While there, I bought some pieces of lapis and apatite.  On the way back we tried going to Vasszecseny, where we learned our map was inaccurate and that we’d need another hour detour to see the castle there (which we were too tired to do).  Some other notes about the trip are that in each town and village we visited or passed through, there were dozens of men and women dressed up going to church to celebrate Szent Istvan (Saint Stephen) who was the King that allowed Christianity within the country.  Elder Alldredge and I returned tired and sunburned.  It wouldn’t have been so bad, except that today became windy and we were pedaling straight into the wind the whole way back.  When we got back, the other Elders came over and we just lounged around and lazied away the rest of the day.  Out of all the Missionaries I’ve ever served with or around, only Elder Vandermark and Elder Reese really liked to travel and go see things on P-Day’s.  I’m looking forward to getting to email tomorrow.  My miracle was getting to ride through the Hungarian countryside today.  We saw storks (haven’t seen them since leaving Bekescsaba), tens of thousands of yellow Sunflowers, literally several to dozens of millions of pumpkins, and a drinking fountain (not at all common here in Europe).

13 August 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 6 August
Our District of four played card games for most of the day.  My miracle today is that as far as Missionaries go, I’ve been very successful, healthy, and creative in my cooking.  Out of my six companions here in the field, only Elder Reese regularly made more than five different meals (counting cereal and bread with cheese).  Elder Alldredge is going to be a tough one to help.  I hope my wife and family appreciate this one day.

Tuesday, 7 August
Two dogs today.  Lots of studies.  I’ve found that I’m spending twice as much money since I got Elder Alldredge.  Our only successful program was with A.  We had dinner with her and shared an object lesson on the Apostasy.  Made a lot of calls today.  The seat on my bike broke.  I had to ride it standing up since this afternoon.  My miracle is that this is the first time I’ve been so excited to go to the Dentist.  I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Wednesday, 8 August
Four different events today.  We met with a new investigator named B.  We met in the Foter (town square) for only about 20-25 minutes.  Unfortunately, she wasn’t too interested and I don’t think we’ll be seeing her again soon.  I got my bike seat fixed, so now I can ride sitting down again.  Finally made it to the Dentist.  They polished and whitened my teeth, took three x-rays, and didn’t find any fractures, cracks, or cavities, or other damage.  And, that was it.  I was a little surprised they didn’t add some sort of cap or filling to my tooth or grind it down a little so it wasn’t so sharp.  Oh well.  At least things weren’t worse.  That was today’s miracle.  At Angolora tonight I had my largest class yet since coming here.  There were five that came, three of which were new.  Elder Alldredge shared a short spiritual thought at the end on the Book of Mormon.

Thursday, 9 August
Today I was on splits with Elder Haws.  In the morning I planned out and put together the schedule and my training for tomorrow’s District Meeting.  Elder Haws and I made it tracting for a while and talked to three people for a decent time and got one let in.  Our only program was with K.  We were there for over two hours.  However, we went with one of her Home Teachers and during that time did home teaching, shared a message of our own, and got her to bear testimony herself for half an hour.  The Zone Leaders are here for a blitz and District Meeting tomorrow.  My miracle today is that Elder Bullock and Elder Alldredge, while on splits found a very interested investigator.  We’re hoping he comes to church on Sunday.

Friday, 10 August
Today I was on splits with Elder Wiborny, who is definitely the oldest Missionary in the Mission.  He has been here longer than any other Missionary, including Senior Missionaries, and our Mission President.  It was great to get to talk and work with him.  This morning we had our District Meeting.  There were ten of us there.  I led the meeting and gave a 45 minute training on the physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual aspects of both missionary work and the gospel.  I then tied it into all the various blessings we can promise investigators which we role-played.  Elders Alldredge, Clevel, Wiborny, and myself split up and went tracting for 4 hours, during which we were only able to get one phone number…ouch.  We also had two cancellations.  At Csaladi Est, two members and one investigator came.  My miracles are that I discovered and explored the Branch House attic and that I am starting to memorize more parts of my quote book.

Saturday, 11 August
There were a couple events today.  We got dogged twice, so we had lots of time to go streeting and tracting.  Also today was the District Talent Show, made up of members form Szombathely, Sopron, and Papa.  Or, at least it would have been except that no one from Papa came and only one from Sopron attended.  My miracle today is that my companion is courageously and aggressively expanding his talents and abilities.  He lit a stove for the first time yesterday, and today was his first time lighting an oven.

Sunday, 12 August
President Smith and his wife attended and spoke in church today.  Even more exciting, Z came.  This is one habit we need to establish for him to be baptized.  After church I made phone calls for 1 ½ hours, but almost no one is able to meet this week.  I also had time to review a few of the Ensigns I’ve read.  There are so many Ensigns!  Each year the Ensigns published are, together, hundreds of pages longer than the Book of Mormon, and we have several years, even a couple decades, of Ensigns.  In the evening we had dinner with the S family.  My miracle is that in Sunday School we talked about talents.  I’m so grateful for the many talents that I have received.

6 August 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 30 July
Transfer calls came this morning. Summarized, Elder Bullock and I are indeed both training here in Szombathely. Elder Loveday is leaving to Tatabanya, and Elder Headrick is going to Pest. Elders Rosen and Swett are both Branch Presidents, and Elder Reese is the new AP. So, I will be receiving a Greenie. I’ve always wanted the chance to train on my Mission; it’s just weird to think it’s actually happening.  Elder Headrick and I ran several errands, going to seven shops. My miracle today is transfer calls. In two days, I will be with a brand new Missionary, fresh out of the MTC.

Tuesday, 31 July
We had four programs today. First was with Z again. We reviewed Priesthood power, Apostasy, and Baptism. During the program, he accepted a Baptismal Date for September 15! Yay! I really would love for this to go through. Program #2 was with N - a member who fed us lunch because Elder Headrick is leaving. We shared a short spiritual though on Mosiah 2 and service. Third was A. We spoke about families and eternal marriages, and she gave us a large snack. Last was J. He leaves tomorrow for America. We went to say good-bye, thank you, and best of luck. Tomorrow I’ll get a Greenie. It’ll also be my last chance to see Elders Molnar, Moffett, and Vandermark in the Mission Field. It’s going to be a very, very big day. My miracle today is that J also fed us, leaving us with two feeding programs today.

Wednesday, 1 August
Today was a long day. My companion and I got up at 4:30 this morning. Our train left at 6:00. J and L took the same train as us, which was cool. We arrived in Budapest around 9:05 and were there 45 minutes earlier than any other Missionary. At 11:00 was the training for the Trainers. At 12:30 was the Sorting Hat Meeting, with all 28 of us (Trainers + Greenies). I received my new companion, Elder Alldredge. I’m excited to serve with him and will write more about him in a day or two. After that meeting, we began the third meeting for the District Leaders. There are a lot of changes being made. We will see what fruits they bring.  All seven of my companions were there today. I got pictures with each of them, but wasn’t able to get one with all of them at once. I did however get a three generation picture with my Dad - Elder Moffett, and my Son - Elder Alldredge. It was hard to believe that today was my last time seeing the 13 dying Missionaries for the next year (or longer). They’re gone. It’s so crazy. Half the missionaries I know, my brothers, are going home. In addition, I’m now in the oldest 33% of the mission.  I finished my day with a crazy story for me, my Greenie, and a final laugh to the departing Missionaries from me. Due to conflicting metro and train times, we took a train back to Szombathely with the Gyor Elders. We were cutting it close, and I ended up buying tickets for the six of us. As we were loading all the luggage, the train began to roll out. We got all the suitcases on and all the Elders… except me! The door closed automatically right in front of my face. There was a railroad worker in the back where we were getting on, and he tried hitting a button and yanking on the door to get it open (I could see and hear him yanking and punching the button), and I ran alongside for a while, but it wouldn’t open. So, I was left alone and the other Elders were missing half their tickets. Well, all that I could do was laugh. I called Elder Moffett to let all of their group know what happened so they could laugh too; got on the next train, and arrived 2 hours after the other group. There were only 3 of us (passengers) on the 11 cars. While I was using the bathroom a worker took my suit thinking someone had lost it, but I was able to run and find her. I didn’t get back until 11:30. My miracle today is the great shift in the Mission. Out with the old, in with the new; goodbye to 14, hello to another 14. Also, it’s a good thing I was left and not my Greenie - especially since he wouldn’t have his bags/money or a phone (in addition to the language barrier). That would’ve been an even crazier first day for him. What a crazy way some of us start off (and could start off) our Missions.

Thursday, 2 August
We started our day with studies and giving Elder Alldredge time to unpack. We also went shopping, and then had even more studies (as we are now asked to get at least 4 hours every day). We had only one program which was with P. It went really well. Elder Alldredge was able to ask him some good questions, and, while he only wanted to learn out of the Bible we were able to have a good lesson. The highlight was talking about how we cannot love what we do not know. P loves that saying and I applied it to reading the Book of Mormon. In the end we not only scheduled another program, but Elder Alldredge successfully committed him to read one verse out of The Book of Mormon each day.  After his program, I found four dentists and scheduled an appointment with the one I liked most for Wednesday (the soonest possible slot). I felt really uneasy about my tooth and know that it needs to be taken care of ASAP, as in one day my mother, President Smith, and a member all told me I should get it looked at or it might fall out, with a fourth, another member, telling me the next day. I am convinced that if I don’t act fast, then it really will fall out later down the road. I pray otherwise.  Our district went to Boston so our Greenies could try some Pekseg. We also went both flyering and streeting. We then finished our last hour of studies. It’s late now. The events of yesterday feel non-existent: that 14 left, that 14 arrived, that I’m now in the oldest third, that I’m training. It’s all so weird.

Friday, 3 August
Another 4-5 hours of studies this morning. (I’m fine with it. I’ve always like studies more than 90% of other missionaries). We had one cancellation today followed by several hours of streeting. We were able to get two finds. Csaladi Est was tonight, and would have been the first branch activity for Elder Alldredge and Elder Haws (Elder Bullocks greenie); however, no one showed up. My miracle today is my Mission Son, Elder Alldredge. It’s time to finally write about him. He’s from American Fork; has two younger sisters; attended SUU studying psychology; he has a degree/certificate or something in Neural Linguistics which made him the youngest certified Hypnotist in the nation. He’s traveled around Europe before. His grandmother, Mrs. Alldredge was my First Grade Teacher at Northridge. He did all kinds of hypnotist performances, had nine assistants. Other than that he’s already started blaring EFY music. (I think it’s hilarious whenever I see him fulfill a typical Greenie stereotype.) He has greenie fire and lots of desire. He says “Hello” to everyone we pass on the street. In all, Elder Alldredge is awesome and I look forward to serving with him this transfer.

Saturday, 4 August
Elder Bullock and I met with a less active member named D. We focused on trying to commit him to come to church. We then went streeting for a while and ended our day with Fiatal Est and more streeting as no one came to the activity (like yesterday). If you noticed, today was me and Elder Bullock (as written above). My miracle is that we sent Elders Haws and Alldredge on splits from 12-8:00. During that time they were able to obtain 4 phone numbers and give out two Books of Mormon. Not bad at all. Also, I called and have already set up a program with one of the four numbers they received.

Sunday, 5 August
Today was Fast Sunday, and D came to Sacrament Meeting. The Stake President and his family came and he spoke at the end of Fast and Testimony Meeting. Elder Alldredge and I planned for this coming week. All four of us had dinner with A, the Ss, and the Ks to break our fasts. I’m pretty sure those are two of the biggest families in all of Hungary. Tomorrow is Elder Haw’s and Elder Alldredge’s first P-Day in the country. They’re both pretty excited about it. My miracle today is that happiness and enthusiasm can be contagious. Elder Alldredge’s excitement and high hopes for some things has made it easier for me to be more positive about them. Having a good attitude not only blesses your life, it blesses others as well.

30 July 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Dear Family,

Transfer calls came today.  I will be staying here in Szombathely and will be…..training!  Elder Headrick is going to serve in Pest; Elder Loveday is leaving to serve in Tatabanya, while Elder Bullock and I remain here and receive Greenies.  It is strange to think that I’ll be with a new Missionary by Wednesday.  It should be really fun though.  Another thing that is going on with transfers is that Elder Reese is going to be one of the two Assistants to President Smith.  The entire Mission is about to change.  On Thursday I will be in the oldest third of the Mission.  On to the blog posts:

Monday, 23 July
Today was an unproductive day, and I am very tired.  We spent a while walking around town trying to find souvenir shops, but weren’t terrifically successful.

Tuesday, 24 July (Pioneer Day)
Today’s Pioneer Day!  This morning we received two calls from people who received flyers about English lessons.  We also made several calls of our own out of the Area Book.  Among the contacting we did was a visit to the Library where we learned that it will be impossible to hold Angolora there.  I called the Carpenters to verify permission for us to rent a place.  We met with A and discussed our duty of Service.  Lastly, all four of us Missionaries had dinner and a short program with the Branch President and his wife.  My miracle today is the legacy, heritage, and testimonies the Pioneers left us.

Wednesday, 25 July
We started today with a dog.  That was followed by two hours of tracting in which we had someone threaten to call the police (first time in Szombathely), gave out two Books of Mormon, and found two women who were interested.  They talked with us for fifteen minutes, gave us their numbers and told us to return later.  We then met with an old investigator who mostly just enjoys learning about various religions.  Angolora would have been tonight, however not a single person came to mine or Elder Loveday’s classes.  My miracle today was that we got to talk to J.  While talking to him, we learned that he finally got permission to live in the US.  He leaves August 2 to move to Utah and finally rejoin his wife.

Thursday, 26 July
Well, today was interesting.  We were really busy, but got little accomplished.  This morning Elder Headrick and I met with a woman out of the Area Book (listed as an investigator) only to arrive and find out that she’s been a member since 1998.  Oops.  So we improvised and shared a spiritual thought and asked for referrals.  Lesson to be learned: keep better records, keep them organized, and know other members in the Branch better.  We didn’t have any other programs today so we spent 4 ½ hours tracting.  We got two let-ins.  Both were really nice and kind to us, the second one even fed us a little and gave Elder Headrick a small gift; however, they aren’t really interested in religion or God.  Afterwards we made more calls out of the Area Book.  My miracle is in remembrance of Elders Moffett, Molnar, and Vandermark – all of whom will be home a week from now!  Lastly, I chipped a tooth playing basketball this morning.  I guess that’s one more thing to look forward to in the resurrection.

Friday, 27 July (300 Days left)
Today I have 300 days left on my mission.  Also the Olympics started today in London.  I wish we had been able to watch the opening ceremony.  My miracle today is that we have a Heavenly Mother out there somewhere.  Families are an eternal principle.  Other than that we went to Zalaegerszeg again today.  We met with Z for the second time (who is progressing well) and watched the Restoration video.  We also had another program in Zala with J.  She was streeted back when the area was open.  However, while we did successfully meet with her, she is not at all interested in the gospel.  Zalaegerszeg is a small city, but has a beautiful Belvaros.  We finished our day with Csaladi Est.

Saturday, 28 July
Our only program today cancelled so we spent a couple hours tracting, but were unsuccessful.  In the evening we had a meeting followed by Fiatal Est.  I went whipping for the second time ever.  My miracle is that I found a place to buy peanut butter!  Lastly, I got a haircut.  And I must say, the metric system has stolen my hair.  While I know Hungarians use the metric system, all my companions and their razors have been American, and all my past haircuts have been a 2 on the sides, and a 3 on top (meaning 2/8” and 3/8”).  However, tonight I enlisted Elder Bullock’s help to buzz my hair.  At the same time I completely forgot that he and his Canadian razor use the metric, not imperial system.  So, when we tried a 2 and 3, it ended up being in millimeters not inches…so, I’m practically bald.  It’s nearly 1/3 of its normal shortest length, and I think my Dad might have more hair than me now.  Oh well.  It’ll grow back, and now I won’t have to cut it as often.

Sunday, 29 July
A good amount happened today.  We had two feeding programs with members.  The first was with X and her family.  The second was with S.  Both were really delicious and filling.  Elder Headrick and Elder Loveday each gave seven minute talks in Church today as we think they’re both leaving.  Transfer calls come tomorrow.  We think Elder Bullock and I will both train.  It’s pouring rain again.  My miracle today is that one of the S’s sons returned from the Alpine German Mission (the same one as Tyler and Houston).  While there he served as an Assistant, and then finished as a Trainer.  It was really fun to get to talk to him about it.

That’s all for today.  Email you all next week with my greenie!

Szeretettel,

Shipp Elder

23 July 2012 Letter (Szombathely)

Monday, 16 July
Emailing went well today.  We also walked around to seven different Cathedrals, one of which had a full skeleton inside.  I still would like to go to as many of the nearby Castles as possible, but we need to get permission to switch our P-Day first, as almost all of them are closed on Mondays.  For some reason I felt bad, or kind of guilty today.  I’m not sure why and hope I didn’t forget anything important.  My miracle is that the feeling might just have been necessary to cause self-reflection and prevent slothfulness.

Tuesday, 17 July
Today Elder Headrick and I went falu-blasting with the other companionship.  We biked out to a small town named Zanat and tracted half of it.  We got three phone numbers and gave out three Books of Mormon.  It ended up being the most success I’ve had in a while.  We had one program today which was with A on Tithing and Fasting.  I also gave her a copy of “True to the Faith”.  My miracle today is that on our way back from Zanat we helped a man who had literally “fainted by the wayside.”  While biking alongside the highway we saw the man completely collapse and fall partway into one of the lanes unconsciously.  We immediately pulled off the road and went to help.  When we first reached him, he was still blacked out.  He regained consciousness, but couldn’t get up without three of us helping him; he had a giant egg showing his concussion, and was bleeding from a big gash on the back of his head.  An ambulance was called and Elder Loveday held him the whole time we waited to prevent the staggering and swaying man from falling over again; although when the ambulance arrived, and the paramedics were loading him, he almost hit the pavement again.  Anyways, I’m glad we were there and were able to help this man.

Wednesday, 18 July
Today we went flyering and streeting for several hours, and as we went around, I stopped at multiple places to see if we could hold Angolora or teach English there.  In the evening we had Angolora.  Only one person (not new) came to Elder Loveday’s and my class.  Because it was hot, sunny, and we were outside for several hours, I tried some Rafaello ice cream, which is now in my top 5 flavors.  My miracle is from a couple days back.  I don’t know how, but I’ve forgotten to write that last Saturday B was baptized back in Bekescsaba.  Elder Vandermark said the service went really well.  I’m very thankful and find joy in having learned of one of my previous investigators being baptized in each area I’ve served in.  I’ve been blessed on my mission.

Thursday, 19 July (400th Day on Mission)
I’ve now been away from home and serving the Lord for 400 days.  It doesn’t feel like that.  Yet, I know that I still have over 300 days left to continue making a difference here in Hungary.  We met with Z this morning.  We started talking about the Plan of Salvation, but that quickly stopped and switched to learning more about his past encounters with missionaries.  Baptism was briefly discussed and we will talk more about it next week.  I also learned that he has come to church three times.  We need to discuss priesthood authority and baptism with him next time.  In the afternoon, Elder Headrick and I continued streeting and searching-out buildings.  Around 3:00pm, Elders Headrick and Loveday left for Budapest to get their Resident Cards.  Elder Bullock and I met with J.  He’s hoping to leave in a couple weeks for the States (hopefully on August 2).  It’s raining again and my miracle is that Elders Wiborny and Molnar are here for splits, so I get to work, talk, and visit with them again.

Friday, 20 July
Splits continued today.  In the early afternoon we had a short District Meeting.  The Zone Leaders gave training on “The Warrior” and how to best use our finding weapons.  Elder Molnar and I then met with S and his girlfriend for the first time.  (S had been streeted by the missionaries once in the past).  Hopefully they will meet again.  They said they would try.  After the program, Elder Molnar and I went through the list of 61 places we had found to potentially hold Angolor.  We called them all up and have it narrowed down to 11, two of which we are really hoping for.  By the time the two of us finished the list, we were nearly out of time.  However we had a little time to go tracting.  We only knocked on one door (or rather, csengo-ed one house), and we got the second let-in I’ve had on my mission.  That was today’s miracle.  We then split back, the Zone Leaders left to Papa, and five minutes later Elders Headrick and Loveday returned from Buda.  I talked to Elder Vandermark again and learned that the Sisters have been moved to Szolnok.  It will be interesting to see if more Sisters are sent, if Elders are sent later, or if there only remain two Elders in the city to maintain the branch.

Saturday, 21 July
I don’t have too much to write about today.  During the afternoon I called several dozen numbers out of the Area Book, but only got one program set up and it’s not until August 20.  We had one program today which was with A.  We reviewed the Law of Chastity which went well until we reached homosexuality, (despite my thoughts that this would almost always be the easiest part).  Unfortunately, this is something that is often debated in the media and the scientific and political world which often falsely teaches that some people “are just born that way” and “can’t change the way they are.”  Other than that, she also shared her sorrow and frustration with the weaknesses of old age, and the older body that accompanies it.  Fiatal Est was in the evening, and uneventful.  My miracle today is that although I’ve had my patriarchal blessing memorized for almost a year now, I am, and can still, learn from it.  One phrase in particular continuously ran through my mind and preoccupied my thoughts today:  “You have been blessed richly through your membership in the Church.”  This applies to any active member of the Church and is no secret.  However, how often do we think about it, how grateful are we for it, and do we realize how much of our lives are affected by it, or how wide its influence extends?  I thank the Lord for membership in His holy house.

Sunday, 22 July
It’s already Sunday again.  Today I had the opportunity to spend some time writing letters to those I’ve never written to before.  Something I forgot to include back during my split with Elder Molnar was a quote from him that I told him I would add: “If you are going to be stupid, don’t be stupid about it.”  Good advice for us all.  Today during church three unique things happened.  First off, the Gudgells and the Carpenters (the new office couple) came and spoke.  One of the members in the branch showed me a picture he had drawn and labeled as an analogy using the five steps I had talked about last week in the priesthood lesson.  Third and my miracle today was that D and T, two of my past investigators from Buda came to Sacrament Meeting.  They were both born here, grew up here, and their families still live here so they came up for a visit.  I’m glad they chose to come to church while they were here.  It was fun to get to see and talk to them again.  A couple other things happened today.  In the afternoon and evening I found three rats and then a porcupine on our street.  Also, the quote book I have been working on, now containing several hundred quotes, is almost full.

Szeretettel,

Shipp Elder.
